The Dish on the Delight and the Dysfunction That is Motherhood
My favorite pic of Halloweens past is this one of my boys in their Thomas the Tank Engine costumes. These were made by the loving hands of T-Daddy himself. Aren't they fabulous?
I'm participating in WW with Angie. Stop on by. She's nice!

Thanks for your questions. I LOVE questions. :)
It is hard at first for the kids to get the coordination down of reading notes, reading rhythm, and playing the piano with their hands all at the same time. So trying to learn the rhythm first with a metronome will help a lot. This is what I would do to help your son:
1. Turn on the metronome and show your son that the metronome can go fast or slow and tell your son that the metronome keeps the time (if he already doesn't know.)
2. Turn the metronome on to a speed your son can play the piece at. Have your son listen to the clicks and then have your son try to clap with every click. (This will help your son to keep a steady beat)
3. Now have your son clap the rhythm of the song he is learning with the metronome. Once your son can clap the rhythm with the metronome then have your son sing the rhythm with the metronome. Make sure when he is singing, that he holds out the notes as long as they should be played for (e.g. half note should be sung for 2 counts, whole note should be sung for 4 counts.) It helps a lot to try only clapping/singing the rhythm a few measures at a time.
5. Once your son can sing and clap the rhythm, have your son practice playing the song he is learning on the piano 2 measures at a time. For example, (while the metronome is on) help your son play measures 1-2 until he can play it right. Then measures 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and so on. Then add more measures at a time. Have your son play measures 1-4 and 4-8 and so on until he can play it with out mistakes. Now have your son play the whole song with the metronome on.
6. Once your son can play the song with the metronome on with out any mistakes, turn off the metronome and have your son play the song with the metronome off.
This usually helps my students because they first isolate the rhythm by clapping and singing, and then once they have learned the rhythm they can put everything else together a lot easier.
Hope this helps! You can also read my post under music lessons titled Importance of Using a Metronome. I explain in this lesson more about this there.
Let me know how he does. :)

Oh, we are so freakin' uncreative in the costume department. If I can't buy it, and they can't make it, it ain't happen'. A few years ago, Katie wanted to be a ghost. So, naturally we went to the store to see what they had. Well, we live in the south. The deep south. And the ghost costumes at the store had a seam on top of the head. So when you wear it, it looks like a point. And, I was so not sending my child out looking like a klan member...

Those are darling costumes - how cute!
Take care - Kellan
October 1, 2008 at 7:26 PM
Those costumes are great! I am so excited for dress up! One of the perks of having kids is you get to enjoy these holidays again.
October 1, 2008 at 7:26 PM
Aww they are precious!
October 1, 2008 at 7:50 PM
So fun! I love the homemade costumes, I think kids love it too. My mom used to make my girls' costumes every year and put lots of detail in them. We would put them in a dress up box and keep it all year round. When they got to big for them we gave the box to some friends for their young grandchild to use when she visited.
Thanks for visiting my site and your nice comments! Happy Wednesday!
October 1, 2008 at 8:10 PM
I'm so glad you stopped by my blog! It's nice to meet you too! I hear my children getting into mischief upstairs., gotta run, but will visit again!
October 1, 2008 at 8:33 PM
I love it! My son is too young for a cumbersome costume, but I can't wait to get creative with him.
October 1, 2008 at 9:01 PM
My hubby just saw those adorable trains and said that your hubby is way better than he is! LOL. I'm glad my kids aren't old enought to really vocalize what they want to be. I told them back in March what they were going to be and they haven't said anything about wanting it any other way - even when we go through the store isles of costumes! Strange kids...
